Squid are fast-moving marine animals that belong to the cephalopod group, which also includes octopuses and cuttlefish. Despite often being called “squid fish,” they are not actually fish but soft-bodied invertebrates. Squid are found in oceans all around the world, from shallow coastal waters to the deep sea, where some species grow to enormous sizes.
Squid have elongated, torpedo-shaped bodies that make them excellent swimmers. They use a form of movement called jet propulsion, drawing water into their mantle and forcefully expelling it to move quickly through the water. They have eight arms and two longer tentacles equipped with suction cups, which they use to capture prey such as fish, shrimp, and other small marine animals. Their large, well-developed eyes provide excellent vision, helping them hunt effectively even in low-light conditions.
One of the most interesting features of squid is their ability to release a cloud of ink when threatened. This ink creates a dark screen in the water, allowing the squid to escape from predators. Some species can also change color to blend into their surroundings. Squid are important both ecologically and economically, serving as a key food source for many marine animals and as a popular ingredient in cuisines around the world.
